COUPLES THERAPY WORKSHOP FOR THERAPISTS
A four-day Residential Couples Therapy Training Workshop (Basic and Advanced levels) for
therapists and allied professionals who work with couples and those interested in learning to work with couples. You need not be part of a couple to attend the training workshop for therapists.
Couples Therapy Workshop for Therapists will include:
Daily opportunity to observe Bob & Rita Resnick work with real couples in a couples therapy group. Therapists will sit in an outer circle around an inner circle of couples. Each couple’s work will be followed by discussion with the couples, the therapists and the Resnicks.
All clinical work related to theory and comparisons to other couple’s therapy models – Contemporary Psychoanalytic, Systemic, Cognitive Behavioral and Postmodern models.
Separate theory presentations for the Basic Group and Advanced Groups.
Daily "hands on" supervised practice for all therapists – “role play” for Basic therapists, “real” couples for the Advanced therapists, all with live supervision by the faculty.
Therapists can’t work with couples without it impacting them personally. Therefore, there will be a daily small process group to explore personal reactions to the theory and the clinical work. Faculty will facilitate these groups.
Real therapists and real clients working with real issues.
Optional evening presentations.
International couples and therapist participants.
Elegant, wooded and serene venue, great food and warm camaraderie.
The ultimate and complex human dilemma:
How to be connected with another and
maintain a self...
What being a couple means – cultural and familial introjects
The coupling/uncoupling process itself
Boundaries, intimacy and power
Dealing with differences versus differences in dealing
The "Circle of Relating"
Gender, ethnic, religious and cultural differences
Society's rules about, and models for, marriage, etc. – the larger field
Being respectful of the individuals, the couple, the family and the larger field
Without these basic understandings, many couples therapists struggle and often fail. Selecting bits and pieces across the spectrum of approaches to couple's therapy – a kind of cut and paste approach – does not work well. An understanding of the whole picture is necessary for good couples therapy regardless of theoretical orientation.
Each day, the Resnicks will work live (and perhaps some video) with real couples to illustrate their way of encouraging couples to authentically represent themselves – hopefully with grace and discrimination. By engaging with their partner in this way, each individual discovers his/her true degree of compatibility by being who they are rather than what they and/or others believe they should be. Managed and postured relationships, while "working" temporarily, are fundamentally flawed and lead either to explosions and subsequent withdrawal, or collapsing into quiet desperation. If a primary relationship only works when you’re not you, then it rather defeats the purpose. Thus, the Resnicks encourage an evolving, alive, authentic relationship which reflects the reality of who each person actually is and how they relate with each other.
This will be a practical, hands-on workshop. All clinical work will be related to theoretical
presentations – hopefully making both more meaningful. With regard to other Couples Therapy models, we are interested in integrative similarities as well as differences that separate.
This training program is open to therapists, counselors, clergy, and anyone interested in relationships and the coupling/uncoupling process. Importantly, our model and program is of interest to therapists and counselors who work with couples, regardless of their theoretical orientation. Therapists are encouraged to invite couples they know personally or are working with, to attend the Couples Therapy Workshop for Couples.
OBJECTIVES:
To teach and demonstrate a new conceptual framework and set of lenses to understand
relationships and couples therapy while still allowing the whole spectrum of clinical interventions from various therapeutic modalities.
To understand "communication" difficulties as matters of meaning making (phenomenology) and locus.
To identify common relationship difficulties and discriminate among intrapsychic, interpersonal and gender/social/cultural (larger field) issues.
To demonstrate a field theory, phenomenological and dialogic (relational) approach to
couples therapy, and to relate the actual clinical work to the theory presentations.
To encourage discussion and dialogue comparing the Resnicks’ approach to Psychoanalytic, Cognitive Behavioral, Systemic and Postmodern models.
To broaden the range of therapists’ therapeutic practice.

COUPLES THERAPY WORKSHOP FOR COUPLES
Simultaneous and integrated with the Couples Therapy Training
Workshop for Therapists, we will be holding a smaller Couples Therapy Workshop
for Couples. Here, several couples (some of whom may be therapists themselves)
will work in a daily couples group led by Rita and Bob Resnick with both the
other couples and the therapists from the training workshop present for both the
clinical work and the discussion to follow. Couples will also work
with the more Advanced Couple’s Therapists later on in the day in smaller
groups with Bob and/or Rita providing supervision. In addition, couples
will attend the daily theory sessions along with Therapists from the Basic
Couple’s Therapist Training Group.
This workshop will focus on relationship enrichment as well as dealing with differences and conflicts. We are looking for couples referred either by participant therapists who are attending the program, or couples referred by therapists known to the faculty. Others will also be considered. Couples may be married or not, straight or gay, from any country as long as both persons speak passable English. All couples therapy sessions with the Resnicks will be videotaped with prior written permission for future educational and training purposes.
Couples Therapy Workshop for Couples will include:
Daily Couples Therapy group with Bob and Rita Resnick with all therapists in outer circle. Each couple’s work will be followed by discussion with the couples, the therapist participants and the Resnicks.
Individual couples therapy sessions in a small group with Advanced participants working as therapists under the live supervision of Bob and/or Rita Resnick.
Daily theory presentations about couples and couples therapy for Couples and therapists in the Therapist Basic Group.
Optional evening presentations.
International couples and therapist participants.
Elegant, wooded and serene venue, great food and warm camaraderie.
